Keith DalyGROUP SCOUT LEADERCampsI had the pleasure of joining Silver Troop for their summer camp at Ferny Crofts in the New Forest over the school half term. It was an excellent camp. It was very well organized by a committed bunch of leaders and the boys were extremely well behaved. There were lots of activities for the boys who took part with great enthusiasm. The camp report was also excellent. Congratulations to Paul and his leader team and to all the boys who attended. A full report plus pictures follows under the Silver Troop report. Congratulations to Brownsea Pack who also had an excellent camp report from their weekend training camp at Park Farm. Also to Charterhouse Pack for what I was told was an excellent and fun filled Family Camp. FeteIf all goes well this newsletter should arrive with you just in time to remind you all of the Summer Fete on 3rd July. Not only is it our major fund raising event of the year, but it is also very good fun. If you are not already booked to help please do come along and support us, I am sure you will enjoy yourselves. Ron KintonRon Kinton, one of our Vice Presidents, has moved house and has asked that I
let everybody know his new address which is: ASPEN COLONYAnne Mays (MAYO), Carol Salter (HOLLY)Well through May we had two Bank Holidays but we have still been quite busy. I would like to say Thank You again to Fred for standing in for me on 10th May as I was returning from holiday that Monday. We had Scouts' Own on 16th May in which we saw Lewis Slinger and Joshua Currie moving on to Anglia Pack. Both Holly and I wish them every happiness in their new roles as Cub Scouts. As the weather has been quite kind to us on Monday we have been in the field. We made some of our own Frisbee's, coloured them and flew them in the field. Most of them were very successful, some not quite so good, but it was a fun evening anyway. Tom and Philip made a trail for the boys to follow that went down really well. We found some balloons in our cupboard, drew faces on them and played with them in the field. Then at the end of the evening we had a mini campfire. As we have had several new boys starting with us it has been necessary to re-start the parent rota. It is very important that we have a parent down with us with this number of children, therefore if you are unable to make it would you please arrange amongst yourselves for someone to cover you. BIRCH COLONYAnne Richardson (MAPLE)This month we've made rice crispy cakes, organised by Cherry, and Mrs Whelan came along to help the boys make some pictures for our notice board. We've also made some play dough models and some pasta pictures. Three new boys have started, Robert Hughes, Kieran Mohr and Matthew Jackson. They all seem to be enjoying themselves, and by the time you read this they will have been invested. CEDAR COLONYAnne PriceWith the weather improving, we spent one evening playing games outdoors and planting out the sunflowers we have grown from seed. We have also had a musical evening spent making all kinds of percussion instruments. Learning about our own environment is important and so we went on a walk around Worcester Park High Street with a Stop, Look and Listen questionnaire. The boys did a marvellous job of finding out about the recycling centre and library as well as counting the number of bike racks (you will be amazed just how many there are!), post boxes etc. As mentioned in the last newsletter, I will be giving up the Leader post during the summer due to my pregnancy. Perhaps another parent would consider stepping in (as I did, you will be surprised at how much fun it can be) to lead the Colony after the summer break. Without a new leader, the Colony will not be able to continue. If anyone is interest in finding out more about the role, please contact me. ANGLIA PACKBrenda Hunt (AKELA)We have made use of the good weather this month and spent lots of time outside. We had a great evening over at Nonsuch Park. It started off to be a hike, but once the boys got to the hill they found rolling down lots more fun than walking. We were also very lucky to have a guest from Wallington County Grammar School, Mr Domonic Mochan; Domonic teaches R.E. and very kindly went through the World Faith badge. He made it very interesting showing us slides and setting a quiz. We finished the evening meditating - trying to keep quite for five minutes was very hard for some and impossible for others. We went out into the field and played on the Arial Runway, many thanks to Alan for his support that evening. BROWNSEA PACKLes Prescott (KERICK)No news this month.
Dates for your Diary:
CHARTERHOUSE PACKMargaret Pennington (AKELA)No news this month - but photographs from last month's news: PURPLE TROOPAlan Avery (Scout Leader)
Well done Jack Chasty and Phillip Thorne each getting the Out Door Challenge, Out Door Challenge Plus and Adventure Challenge - all gained in the course of doing the programme. We will try and catch up a bit with test work and awards. I would remind you that if any item of uniform is missing you go home and find it. It is clear that possibly holding Summer Camps at Whitsun does not suit. Everyone was given dates prior to Christmas and I was disappointed in having to cancel. SILVER TROOPPaul Green (Scout Leader)The first meeting of the month saw the boys doing their bit for the Group fund raising effort by jumble collecting. Not the most rewarding way to spend an evening but necessary none the less. The rest of the month was devoted to camp preparation, one evening being spent brushing up their skills at pitching and striking a patrol tent. The boys also learnt about Tilley lamps, Axes and saw usage to ensure they were safe on camp, and it worked, as we suffered no injuries. Silver Troop & 7th Morden's Camp Report We packed the van on Friday night with all the equipment and the boys' bags. With all the help we had it didn't take long at all. Saturday morning, bright and early, with only a few hiccups we made our way to Ferny Crofts Camp Site in the New Forest. We unpacked and set up site in a sheltered patch close to the Warden's office and toilets. We put up all the tents and went for a walk round the site to get to know the place. Sunday morning came and the boys cooked their breakfast and then Brian Yearley showed and helped the boys make a Ballista. They had beanbags as ammo and used the two Ballistas in a competition of who could launch a beanbag the furthest. We had lunch and then the boys had a session of air rifle shooting. Quite a busy day, but the boys cooked their dinner and then played rugby. On Monday we had breakfast and then burnt it off on the assault course that has just been newly built by the army. In the afternoon the boys split into groups and one group went climbing while the others made rafts with Brian. After many knots later, dinner was served and a game of football was played before bed. On Tuesday the boys were in two groups again and in the morning one lot went rafting while the others went for a cycle ride. In the afternoon they went climbing and cycling and by the time they got back they were all thoroughly cream crackered!!! We then had a quiz in the evening as the heavens opened! On Wednesday after a small lie in the boys played Frisbee golf and did a high ropes course and swapped over in the afternoon. After dinner we went down the road and had a game of rounders with a group of cows who wanted to join in! On Thursday we got up, had a kit inspection and then went to Splashdown at Tower Park in Poole and had great fun on the slides. We then went into Poole town centre for a spot of lunch and a walk around and got back in the vans to go and see Harry Potter at the cinema! After lots of popcorn we all got back in the vans to have a quick dinner and off to bed. On Friday we all packed our stuff and all the tents and then packed the vans. After a bit of lunch we cleared up, said goodbye to the warden and headed home. It was an activity packed week with lots of things to do, good weather and excellent food. Thanks to Brenda, Brian, Keith, Charlotte and Andy (7th Morden) and Paul for all the knots, food, games and organisation. The boys had a great time and so did the leaders, the only problem we had were the damn midges! EXPLORER UNITAlan Avery (Explorer Scout Leader)I was pleased to be complemented at the last Scouts Own on the good and smart turnout by the unit. We practised Hardball with the Sutton Rangers - will we win the District Hardball Competition? At Whitsun we had an informed evening as I wasn't around and the next week cycled from the HQ to Headley - x - country! We are preparing to go to Slovakia in August - you have information sheets - perhaps some money can roll in - it appears that places could be at a premium. PARENTS & FRIENDSRichard Marston (Chairman)Jumble SalesAn amazing £840 was raised by the two Jumbles, which we believe is a Group record. Thanks to our Group Chairman Ray for managing the event once again and for all who helped collect, sort and sell the jumble. We are looking for someone to provide a deputy for Ray to assist in the running of our jumbles, please contact me if you feel you can help. Summer FeteSat 3rd July This newsletter is likely to reach you around the date of the fete so I hope you have, or had, a great day out. If you have any comments or suggestions that will enable us to make the next fete even better please let me know. Internet www.4wp.org.ukTo fill a gap in our web site a page has been added to provide information about the Scout Network which exists within the movement for those in the 18-25 age range. This new page provides information about the Network and is a source of contact details for the Greater London South West County Scout Network and our local Sutton Network. We have now moved to a tiered commission structure for www.amazon.co.uk which results in a higher commission rate as the volume of orders increases. Even more reason to do your personal and business shopping via our web site. To help improve communications within the Group please make sure you have registered your email address via the 'Email' page on the web site. How are we doing? The excellent result from the two Jumble Sales has taken our profit for the year to a total of over £3,600. A great performance to date but our progress towards our £8,500 target is heavily dependent on the profit made at the Summer Fete, see the next edition for details. ContactI am pleased to receive any comments, suggestions and offers of help by email to "p and f" at "4wp.org.uk" or by telephone on 020 8337 2641. Message from Shirley CornishThanks to the P & F for the bag of linen, (that did not sell at the Jumble and would have ended up at the dump) it is now on its way to a church in Zambia. FELLOWSHIPGraham SmithWith the visit to Gilwell Park taking place on the 10th June, this replacing our usual end of the month meeting in May, there is little to report in this issue of the "4th News". Suffice it to say therefore that our usual support was given at the two recent Jumble Sales. It is gratifying to know the record result achieved. Not a great deal of support for the work morning on 23rd May. Perhaps we shall do better on the next occasion, 11th July. Looking forward, plans are in place for the BBQ which follows the AGM on the 13th June and regarding the Summer Fete on the 3rd July the Fellowship will be manning the Plant Stall and, of course, the Monkey Bridge. Regarding the former, donations of plants will be most welcome so that the stall can be well stocked. With our Boules evening taking place on Thursday 24th June, the following event is the BBQ evening taking place at John and Bridget Green's home on the 29th July, time 7.30pm. So the John and Bridget know the number to cater for would those of you who intend going please call them and let them know. The Fellowship's August event is to be a visit to R.H.S. Garden at Wisley for an evening of "Music in the Garden" on the 17th August. More details of this event will be available later.
