GROUP SCOUT LEADER

Fred Fletcher

St George's Day Parade will be held on Sunday 24th April 2005.
We will meet at St. Dunstan's School Cheam at 2.00pm for a 2.30 pm start. The parade will follow the same route as last year, marching to Cheam High School where we shall have a short service and renew our Promise.

The Parade will return to Cheam by 4.30 pm. As usual we shall expect ALL our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts to attend this important event in smart uniform. Please keep the date free - Sunday 24th April

The Scouters, Helpers, Instructors and Fellowship had a wonderful meal cooked for us by the Beaver Leaders to honour Baden-Powell at our recent B-P Supper; I would like to thank them very much for all the hard work in making this a successful evening.

My guest for the evening, Mr Rene Van Kuyk has asked me to thank everyone for making him feel so welcome. He told me that he had "a great time and would like to visit us again".

Well done to everyone who helped out at the recent Auction, as usual it was very successful and raised £710 for Group funds - Many Thanks.

Coming up: -

Jumble Sales 7th and 14th May - We need your help, please contact me or Ray Hammett to offer your services.

Summer Fete 2nd July - The 'Big One'. The best and biggest Summer Fete in Kingston and Sutton. We need your support. Let's do it together.

ASPEN COLONY

Anne Mays (MAYO), Carol Salter (HOLLY)

Firstly we must apologise for cancelling our meeting on 21st February due to the weather. We contacted as many people as was possible to let them know but we didn't think it worth the risk with the snow falling so quickly.
This month we have made some fantastic Valentine Cards most went to the long suffering Mums but some went to girlfriends we suspect. We also had a wonderful pancake evening all the pancakes were a success and were all readily eaten and enjoyed by all. Anything to do with food always seems to be a good evening!
We have also had half term in the middle of all this and therefore this newsletter is relatively short.
All of the Beavers enjoyed the film at the UCI cinema in Sutton on Sunday 27th February it was a district event and approximately 200 boys attended. The film was the Magic Roundabout throughout the film you could have heard a pin drop so we would assume they all enjoyed it. They also enjoyed their drink and popcorn.
Finally we made some wonderful cards for Mothers Day and each of the boys should have taken home some flowers nicely wrapped in coloured tissue with ribbon around the outside that's if they all got home in one piece - still the thought was there! Please can you all start sorting out unwanted gifts and toys for the Summer Fete it seems like a long time away but it will soon be here and we need as many things as we can get: You can bring them down to the Group at any time so you don't have to store them at home. Thank-You.

BIRCH COLONY

Sheila Kinton (BAGHEERA)

We welcome three new boys into the Colony this month Bailey Bruton, Brandon Gibson and Reece Chubb and hope they will enjoy their time with us.

My thanks to the rest of our team for running the Colony whilst I was unwell and a big thank you to Andy Marshall for organising the cinema visit in my absence.

Last month we made pancakes, had an evening based on Lord Baden Powell and Scouting, finishing with a birthday cake. We made chocolate filled hearts for Mothering Sunday, which I'm sure the Beavers' mothers appreciated.

CEDAR COLONY

Valerie Street (BADGER)

Our last evening before half term was a challenge. Did we do something for Valentines Day, Chinese New Year or remember Shrove Tuesday? Not a problem for Cedar Colony. We decorated biscuits with heart shapes cut out of marzipan and we added some finishing touches with red icing, we made red dragons on sticks and we held pancake relay races!

We did some beautiful pictures made out of pasta and grains which were ready for the notice board for the Baden-Powell Supper. We have also made clay pots which will be decorated for Easter.

Harry Watts has been enrolled having joined us in January and we also welcome Kyle Chudek-Marrion to Cedar Colony.

ANGLIA PACK

Brenda Hunt (AKELA)

We had a school half term during February which reduced our meetings; however we were able to make pancakes which we all enjoyed. I don't think any pancakes were dropped on the floor! We can class this as a success.

Our Pack also held a Board Game Evening in which Cubs played many different board games, this was fun.

The Pack also had a Talent Contest; the Cubs were able to show off their talent and skills during the evening.

BROWNSEA PACK

Les Prescott (KERICK)

As is the tradition, every Cub cooked a pancake on our nearest meeting to Shrove Tuesday. Thanks to Sally and John for masterminding this. We rotated the sixes between pancake making, inter-six handball (thanks Michael, Harry and Daniel) and learning mapping and compass (thanks Ben).
After half-term, we had an exciting evening when we booked four lanes at the Sutton Bowling Alley. We had some really high scores (with the gully protectors in place!) - Great fun. We have started a series of meetings working towards the three Safety badges - Home Safety, Road Safety and Personal Safety.

Congratulations to the following Cubs on gaining badges:
Creative Challenge: Rhys Mohr, Luke Norrie-Rolfe, Jamie Smart
Chief Scout's Silver Award: Charlie King

Some dates for your diaries:
Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th May - Weekend training camp
Sunday 24th July to Friday 29th July - Summer Camp

CHARTERHOUSE PACK

Margaret Pennington (AKELA)

One day the older boys who are due to go up to Scouts soon were invited to a District Fun Event with younger Scouts so that they could do some linking Cub/Scout activities. Everyone had a lovely time with lots and lots of challenges from climbing high mountains to snowball making.

Another Saturday we had Richard and Lackshman representing the Pack at the District Chess Competition. They played very well and were a real credit to the Pack - well done boys.

After much discussion and preparation on Wednesday the boys ran a Bring and Buy with lots of games to raise money for Vivehananda Children's Home, the orphanage in Sri Lanka which Lackshman's mother has visited. With the support of many members of the Group £225 was raised - thank you all so much, parents can be very proud of their thoughtful and caring sons.

We all had a chance to rest up at half term and then were right back into it with an excellent Pack night where we were all enlightened on the life and times of Lord Baden-Powell and why the Scout Movement started - thanks Fred.

PURPLE TROOP

Alan Avery (Scout Leader)

We prematurely cooked pancakes garnished with all sorts of grey substances- we wiped the marks off the ceiling! We had a go at Route Cards in preparation for mountain camp after Easter - it was nice to see the newcomers got the hang of it. We were to cook twists and backwoods cook sausages on open fires but the weather was so awful we cooked hot dogs indoors. We'll do the twists next week weather permitting. We only had one lad on the sleepover - see Explorer report.

SILVER TROOP

Paul Green (Scout Leader)

It's been a busy old month for us during March, I am first of all pleased to announce that Silver troop now has its very own Website; this can be found at www.silvertroop.co.uk It has been expertly designed and put together by one of our own Scouts, Tom Newman. He has taken many hours of his time and come up with a superb result. Much of the website is only available to members so if you would like to have a look, please register using your first and surnames. This will enable us to keep a tighter control on the security of the website and ensure that it is only used by those who we want to access it.

The website will contain notices and dates for your diaries on what is happening within the section and Group with announcements about meetings, camps and upcoming events that we would like you to be aware of. As the site is a forum based site it will allow the boys (and adults) to discuss issues, ideas and anything else with other scouts and leaders. We are hoping that our member list will spread across the district and maybe further.

Within the website we also have new e-mail addresses, my new e mail is paul at silvertroop.co.uk and the new general e-mail address is info at silvertroop.co.uk either of these two can be used to find out anything or for new members who are interested in joining.

Camp has now been formally booked at Huish Woods campsite in Taunton, Somerset. After visiting the site the leaders decided that it offered the best activities and camping grounds. Letters have already gone out and we will be taking 19 boys away with us from Saturday 28th May until Friday 3rd June.

During the month we have been doing a lot more badge work and invested several new boys into the Troop, along with the Patrol Leaders and Assistant Patrol leaders finishing off their Chief Scout's Gold Award. Although some have been more successful than others in completing some of the tasks set for them. I look forward to the evenings when they organise it all as part of the award and the leaders can have a little break!

EXPLORER UNIT

Alan Avery (Explorer Scout Leader)

We had a sleepover at half-term testing the Q M's new camp beds. We had a big bonfire and burnt numerous trek cart loads of wood, felled a large dead tree and burnt it, dug out more soil from beside the garage and cleared two trek loads of leaves from the front. We also cleared and burnt all the rubbish that people dump around the dustbins and leave to fester.

We cycled up to Chelsea Bridge for a hamburger - it was freezing! Pat Jacobs kindly came along and ran a fitness evening - God, weren't you lot in a sorry state!

We had a good and bad food evening with the Rangers and they ran some silly games - which suited the Explorers. We were to have job interviews and money matters but this was postponed a week in order to get the person to interview everyone. Consequently an informal evening was held.

FELLOWSHIP

Graham Smith

On behalf of all members of the Fellowship I think that all who contributed, in any way whatsoever, to the two very successful jumble sales on the 5th and 12th February, should be heartily congratulated. I do not know if the figure (in excess of £1,000.00) was a record but it can't be far short of one.
As generally seems to be the case now, the work morning on the 13th received very limited support but some useful work was nevertheless undertaken and, of those few who were present, Fellowship members were well to the fore.

With the completion of the business part of the evening at our meeting on the 24th February, John Green (ably supported by Bridget) gave his talk on cruising and showed one or two films that whetted a few appetites and brought back memories to others. These were followed by a film he had produced when he and Bridget themselves were cruising. A most entertaining hour and a half.

Those of us who were able to attend the Group's B-P Supper on Saturday, 26th February, once again experienced an extremely enjoyable evening. The meal prepared by the Beaver leaders was of a very high standard and the service of the "waiting staff', Beaver leaders, Phil Thorn, Tom Newman and Katy (Valerie Street's daughter) could not be faulted. The highlight of the evening, I think, came when GSL Fred introduced his guest, Rene Van Kuyk a Dutchman who although having lived in England for the last 50 years had been a scout in Holland before war broke out in 1939 but went "underground" during the Nazi occupation.

He joined the Dutch resistance movement but was eventually captured and it was only by great good fortune that he escaped a firing squad. Fred was able to relate some of Rene's experiences during those troubled war years and it made most fascinating listening.
The admiration and respect everyone felt for Rene was reflected in the warm applause he received.
Our March meeting on the 31st is, of course, the Fellowship AGM and which will be followed by a cheese and wine party organised by Geoff and Pauline Morris.

After business has been completed at our meeting on the 27th April, Colin Read (who has spoken to us before) will be telling us about "Treasures of Victorian Rubbish Dumps" and we shall be moving away from H.Q. for our 26th May meeting when we visit the Hogs Back Brewery, near Farnham.
