GROUP SCOUT LEADER

Fred Fletcher

Well done to everyone who helped at the Summer Fete, it was without doubt a wonderful afternoon and I know that a lot of people really enjoyed it. Many thanks for all the hard work put in by the many people that make this fete so successful. I'm happy to report that the Fete raised approximately £3500.
Congratulations to Matthew Coates now in Brownsea Pack, on being awarded 'Star' Reporter for Scouting Magazine. His piece will be appearing in the magazine in the August/September edition.
Our Scout friends from Holland have been camping in our H.Q. for their summer camp, the weather I'm afraid wasn't all that good, never the less they set up an excellent camp in our field and it all looked very colourful with the Dutch flags flying around the field. It was fun having them visit us and despite the weather I'm sure they enjoyed their visit. Many thanks to the parents who gave the Dutch Scouts home hospitality for one night; I know they enjoyed being with you. Also many thanks to Alan Avery who looked after our guests during the week by taking them around and driving the mini-bus, thank you Alan.
Whilst writing these notes the bombs went off in London and our Dutch friends were due to visit London that day. I rushed down to the station to stop them, luckily they had heard the news and were making their way back to our H.Q. They did pick an eventful week!
I understand that the Joint Cub Fun-Night held at our H.Q. was great fun and the boys really enjoyed the events organised by Les Prescott and Margaret Pennington.
Some 20 Scouts attended the District Water Weekend, I know this is always an enjoyable weekend and I'm sure everyone wants to thank Paul Green and Alan Avery for taking our scouts along. Did anyone get wet?
Well done to all the Beaver Scouts of Aspen Colony on running an excellent Scouts' Own.
I believe most sections (If not all) will re-open after the summer break during the week commencing 12th September.
Don't forget Parents the subscriptions will also be due that week!!!
Have a nice break or holiday and to the sections that are going on Summer Camp I hope you all have excellent camps.
Don't forget The Big Band Concert at H.Q. on Saturday 10th September Tickets are available from me - ring 020 8337 7109.

Alan Avery

We express our sincere sympathy to Alan upon the death of his Father a few months ago and his Mother recently.

ASPEN COLONY

Anne Mays (MAYO), Carol Salter (HOLLY)

Firstly please let us thank both the parents and children who supported us in any way during the Summer Fete and also in our Scouts' Own Service. I have to say that both were a huge success and enjoyed by all who took part. Thank you once again.
We have had a busy month as usual and also as usual we need to say some sincere thanks to people who help us in one way or another. Mr Crisp who came down with his whole family to show the boys some beautiful snakes and other insects and explained in detail how to look after them and to advise that any animal needs constant care and attention.
Thank you to Alan Avery for coming down to help the boys with knotting and offering his time. Hopefully they will remember some of them. Thank you to Fred our Group Scout Leader for standing in for me once again.
All sections can use a little extra help sometimes so if any parents can pass on some simple tricks of their trade we would love to hear from you. It's not rocket science our age boys are between 6 and 8 years old. So if you are a Builder, Electrician, Nurse, Bank Robber (only joking!) please come forward and maybe once in a while give some of your valued time to these boys - maybe even your own children would appreciate to understand a little more of what you do.
We have been collecting various items from the field in a nature hunt and we were invited to join the Scouts from Holland who were camping on our premises at the time to see how they had set up their campsite and dining area and also to play a game of volley ball.
As the summer holidays approach Holly and I would like to wish you all a lovely summer break wherever you go we hope the weather is kind to you and we will hopefully see you all in September unscathed. Take Care.

BIRCH COLONY

Sheila Kinton (BAGHEERA)

Welcome to three new boys - Connor Duncan, Theo Hunt and Harry Johnston, whom we hope will enjoy being members of our Group. We have invested Adam Higgins and have sent Scott Marshall up to Brownsea Pack, where we are sure he will enjoy being a Cub Scout.
Many thanks to all our parents for their generous contributions to Birch sideshow at the Group Fete - we made over £82 profit which was great.
During last month the Beavers learnt how to make their own sandwiches, we had a visit to Worcester Park Library, where it turned out that the Assistant Librarian who looked after us had been a Venture Scout in Purley. Brownsea Cubs kindly lent us their parachute for an evening of games on the field and last week we went to Cuddington Rec. for games and a picnic.
Well done to the following boys who have been awarded badges -
2nd year - Scott Marshall and Lewis Webb
1st year - Robert Hughes, Sam North, Ciaran Mohr and Connor Hampstead.
Discovery Challenge - Theo Cordery and Max Fitzgerald

CEDAR COLONY

Valerie Street (BADGER)

We are working towards the Outdoor badge, so we have spent some time on the field recently. We would like to thank Alan Avery for spending time with the boys and explaining about old and modern tents. I was very impressed that the beavers managed to put up, hide in and take down three tents and manage a quick game all in one hour!
Sally (aka Squirrel) devised and led an excellent treasure hunt and all the boys went home with a prize.
Sadly our trip to Cheam Park for a sandcastle building competition had to be cancelled due to the rain. We shall rearrange that event in September.
We devised a Really Revolting Stall for the Summer Fete, which attracted some interesting comments and lots of smiles. Thank you to the parents who donated sweets for prizes and I was very impressed with the seven seconds it took one person to eat a whole pickled gherkin!
My admiration goes to the children and adults who were willing to get messy for a good cause and my personal thanks to Squirrel, her children and her mum for all their help.

ANGLIA PACK

Brenda Hunt (AKELA)

No news this month.

BROWNSEA PACK

Les Prescott (KERICK)

This month began with a practice for the District Matball competition. Well done to the team and thank you Harry for coaching the boys.
We've also learned about lighting wood fires and then cooking sausages over them.
The boys enjoyed the Group Cub Evening where they played on a Bouncy Castle, followed a string trail and took part in various games, even though it was rather wet. Then we finished with hot dogs and a campfire.
Our rounders game in Nonsuch Park the following week also ended in the rain.
Thank you to those who helped with our stall at the fete and provided the cakes. Congratulations to our Tug of War team on winning the trophy and to Harry the coach.
We now look forward to our summer camp.

CHARTERHOUSE PACK

Margaret Pennington (AKELA)

Sorry I missed last month's deadline. Although I failed dismally everyone else was working very hard - continuing badge work; the sports enthusiasts invited us all to join them at swimming - it was an excellent outing.

The gardener's wonderful effort along with Rama and Richard was a real credit to the group at the fete. Lovely! For weeks and weeks matball practice was undertaken and on the night the boys really did put their all into every game, because of all the effort and achievement we had to have a party on Pack night.

The Group executive kindly agreed to move the AGM to allow the sections to go to the Fryland's Fun Day. The AGM was short and thankfully many of our parents did support it. Thank you. The Fun Day was well worth going to. The weather was lovely and various activities were on offer all day; we were spoilt for choice.

We did of course fit programme selling onto one Pack night!

On a dark and stormy Friday night we had booked a joint activity evening with Brownsea Pack. In spite of the thunder and lightening everything went ahead - everything moved indoors and a lovely evening was had by those who turned up - culminating in a campfire which was outside as the rain stopped just in time. Thank you to Les and his team and to the Beavers who briefly joined us.

The local Police Officer came down to talk to the boys for one meeting and we now know that if we need the Police for anything we can call them.

For the meeting before the Fete all out parents yet again showed how wonderfully helpful they can be. Mum's packed and wrapped prizes for the Tombola and Dad's helped put up tents - an excellent job done.

On Thursday and Friday night a few parents continued to help and on Saturday everyone turned out again for the Fete. Unfortunately some of the boys had to leave before the Tug of War final so Brownsea Pack won….well done to them! Next year the boys will get their diaries sorted out with their parents before the day.

PURPLE TROOP

Alan Avery (Scout Leader)

At Whitson we did our usual sleep-over. We went cycling at the Devils Dyke by Nonsuch Park. 3 lads attended the water weekend - thanks Paul Green for overseeing this. We had the yearly sales drive of Fete programmes - quite successful.

SILVER TROOP

Paul Green (Scout Leader)

No news this month.

EXPLORER UNIT

Alan Avery (Explorer Scout Leader)

As we needed finances we did a bag packing exercise at Asda's in Sutton and raised the princely sum of £205 - well done the 6 lads that participated. We made hot air balloons - most of which caught fire! We did backwoods cooking, went orienteering at Beddington Park and went to Sandown for golf. Thank you to the few that manned the swing boats - all three of them - and raised £107. It would have been nice to have had better attendance at the Scout's Own.

PARENTS & FRIENDS

Thanks to every one for the tremendous support for our fete raising approx £3500 for the Group.

Our next event is the Big Band Night on Saturday 10th September - buy your tickets NOW!

FELLOWSHIP

Graham Smith

A successful Group AGM took place on the 8th June followed by a very enjoyable cheese and wine party organised by Peter Phillips and Geoff and Pauline Morris. My thanks to them for arranging the event in my absence.
Saturday 11th June, was "Spring Clean the Den" day. An able team of members turned to and gave both the interior and exterior a good dusting down and tidy up - all in my absence once again! My thanks to them all. A photo of the noble band is reproduced below.

Outdoors again for our June meeting - the Boules evening - organised by Colin and Pam Barnard which took place on the Field. The fine, hot weather which we were experiencing at that time continued for the evening and an enjoyable fun event was had by all. Geoff and Pauline Morris were celebrating their Golden Wedding Anniversary within a day or two and had generously brought along wine for all who were there which allowed us to offer our congratulations and to drink a toast to them on this special occasion. Colin and Pam were thanked for organising the evening.
The following Monday evening saw the beginning of a very busy week for many Fellowship members starting with the erection of the monkey bridge in readiness for the Group's Summer Fete on the 2nd July followed, as the week progressed, with erecting the wide range of tentage required for the event. All this essential work was carried out under the most able leadership of Brian Yearley to whom, I believe, a sincere vote of thanks is due from all concerned who were involved in organising the Fete.
The day itself was overcast but warm and thankfully the rain held off. Fellowship assistance was, as usual, much in evidence on various stalls and we look forward to what we all hope will have been a big financial success.
Our July meeting - the BBQ - will have taken place by the time these notes are read and we then look forward to returning indoors on the 25th August when, after the business of the evening has been completed, Shirley Cornish will be speaking to us about her earlier visit to Armenia.
Our September meeting takes place on the 29th when Peter and Marion Phillips are organising "Countdown" to exercise our mental ability!
