GROUP SCOUT LEADER

Fred Fletcher

Congratulations to Tom Newman and Nick Attwell on gaining the Young Leader Award. It is so nice to see the younger members of our Group having been Beavers, Cubs and Scouts now beginning to take on leadership roles. Well done, and there's more where they came from.
I would like to thank Andy Marshall, our Assistant Quarter-Master, for all his hard work on the red van. On his own he has managed to remove all the Parcel force signs from the van and we now have a gleaming red van - Thank you Andy. I know it wasn't that easy.
Don't forget the Auction on Saturday 12th November. You never know you might find a `gem' that will appear on the "Antiques Road Show" and be worth thousands of Pounds - I wish!
And the Big One will be the Christmas Bazaar on Saturday 26th November - I can't wait! See you there.

ASPEN COLONY

Anne Mays (MAYO), Carol Salter (HOLLY)

Well September is here and the summer is almost over. Now is the time to sort out any unwanted gifts for the Christmas Bazaar. This year it will be on Saturday 26th November. As you can imagine this time of the year is very busy for the Leaders in each of the sections so if anyone can help in any way would you please let us know?
On our first evening back we did a holiday poster and pinned it to our notice board and we discussed the different types of transport we travelled in. The following week we took the bus to Worcester Park Station taking on board the different forms of transport we noticed on the way and discussing safety like helmets and seat belts. For the third week we did four different bases drawing and cutting out all different types of travel on land - sea - road and air. Some of the boys came up with some really good answers and pictures. I would like to say a big thank-you to Brenda Hunt for coming down to help with our third meeting as Holly was away taking a trip on the Rhine in Germany.
Lastly but not least the whole of Aspen Colony would like to say a big thank you to Tom Newman for helping for such a long period of time. We all miss him greatly but we are also happy that he is now helping with Anglia Pack and are sure that he will be a great help to them all. Thank you and best wishes to you Tom xxxxxxxx.
We have a new boy who has just joined us his name is Liam Barry we hope he will enjoy his time with us

BIRCH COLONY

Sheila Kinton (BAGHEERA)

This month we produced our autumn collage for the notice board, held a treasure hunt and painted containers ready for our bulb planting.
We judged the sunflower competition from the summer and Brandon Gibson was the winner with a huge plant measuring 2.65 metres - well done, Brandon

CEDAR COLONY

Valerie Street (BADGER)

We finished the summer with a sports day and BBQ and we had so much fun, I think it would be a good idea in 2006 to have a Tri Colony sports day with a BBQ on a lovely summer evening.

We are delighted to welcome Andrew Hunter and Ryan Torcy to Cedar Colony and we will be very sad to say goodbye to Jack Rosenthal who will have a wonderful time in Brownsea Pack.

We also welcome Grant Hamilton as our new assistant and we already appreciate his calm contribution.

ANGLIA PACK

Samantha O'Reilly (AKELA)

No news this month.

BROWNSEA PACK

Les Prescott (KERICK)

We began our autumn programme with an evening of games on the field organised by Harry and Daniel and the following week, Michael led a fitness evening.

In mid-September, we delivered Jumble Sale notices and on our return split into groups learning how to use a compass, mapping symbols, how to tie a reef knot, clove hitch and the more adventurous learnt the highwayman hitch.

Our theme the following week was the senses and again we split into bases with tasting being the most popular. We had a feeling base trying to work out what different objects were, blindfolded; a sound base working out what different sound effects were; the sight base where we had a "spot the difference" contest and the smell base working out the different smells.

Congratulations to the following Cubs on gaining badges:

PURPLE TROOP

Alan Avery (Scout Leader)

With four boys going to the Explorer Unit and just one coming up we have become a little depleted - however, as we know big is always beautiful!
We have done various things - orienteering, woggle making and laser quest. Thank you to the lads who conducted the Scouts' Own and both Silver and Purple Troop lads for reporting on Eurojam. Thanks in particular to Leigh Wicks for excellent work on the Eurojam pictures and superbly conducting a visual service.

SILVER TROOP

Paul Green (Scout Leader)

No news this month.

EXPLORER UNIT

Alan Avery (Explorer Scout Leader)

We have been to Headley, watched a film on "widescreen" in the Den and this coming week we have Unit elections for the new committee. I have delayed it as we have no less than 11 up from the Troops and their input is essential to decide the programme and discuss where we may go on our expedition next year. Mountain Camp will be at Easter as usual - you shall have dates soon. Some of you owe subscriptions - cough up!

PARENTS & FRIENDS

Thanks for those who supported our two Jumble Sales which raised over £900 but as always we could have used more help - please see if you can make it next time.
We would also welcome any more volunteers to the P & F committee our next two meetings being on 9th November and 8th December. Give me a ring to offer your services.
We have three more fundraisers to fit in this year before Christmas - see how many you can support.

On Saturday 5th November there is the Group Firework Display starting at 7.00pm. Entrance is FREE for accompanied Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. Well behaved Parents and Adults get in for only £4.00

The Grand Auction takes place on Saturday 12th November 2.30 pm

The grand finale to the year is our Christmas Bazaar on Saturday 26th November starting at 12 noon. We need everyone who is available to offer to help - don't wait to be asked - contact me NOW.

FELLOWSHIP

Graham Smith

We reminded ourselves of the various events coming up in the "busy season" leading us to Christmas - Jumble Sales, Scouts' Own, Work Morning, Fireworks display, Auction, Christmas Bazaar, Senior Residents' Party and our traditional Christmas Eve service. A busy time ahead!
There was also talk on potential new members for the Fellowship who would all be contacted.

At the conclusion of the business meeting we moved into the hall where Peter and Marion Phillips put our mental ability to the test with their presentation of "Countdown" - complete with a couple of jokes, a la the late Richard Whiteley. We didn't quite match the skills of the contestants on the TV show but it all proved very enjoyable. Peter and Marion were thanked for the great amount of preparatory work they had undertaken in organising the evening and for generously providing refreshment.

Our November meeting takes place on Wednesday 16th when we are visiting the Wood turners' Society at the Elmcroft Pavilion at North Cheam (alongside Sainsbury's). We shall meet there at 7.30pm. We shall not be in the Hall that evening.

Our Christmas Eve Service this year will be led by Ian Smith at 7.30pm in the Den.

A DAY TO REMEMBER

Christine and Steve Wicks

On Saturday 22nd October we set off early to Gilwell Park with Leigh who was to receive his Queen's Scout award from the Chief Scout, Peter Duncan. This was the first time in recent years that the presentations were to be made at Gilwell. The presentations started promptly at 11am with a fanfare from the band for the arrival of the Queen's Scouts.

Peter Duncan had a refreshingly relaxed but professional approach to the ceremony. Each recipient was interviewed by him, TV style, delving into what had been their most interesting activity on their way to gaining their award, what they enjoyed, how they felt about Scouting, would they become a leader, what qualities they thought we necessary for Scouting in the 21st century etc etc. A very different Chief Scout to previous ones and lacking in some basic scout knowledge - 'What's backwoods cooking' he had to ask - but so very enthusiastic about everything he heard the award holders had done and encouraging them to go further in Scouting.

Leigh with Peter Duncan - Chief Scout

We met him afterwards for a less formal photo and asked if he would send a good luck message to the cast of the 'Souwest' Gangshow which he willingly did, writing 'Sorry I won't be there - have a great show - Peter Duncan, Chief Scout and Thespian' on a poster.
Another Scouter, there with his daughter to receive her award, recognised Leigh's scarf as 4th Worcester Park and remarked that he'd been in the Red Six of B Pack back in 1959 -61 - he couldn't remember any names but we passed on the website address for his future interest. Tony Kilburn is now Deputy District Commissioner for Swindon North, Wiltshire - it's a small world isn't it!

Afterwards we toured the site and saw many changes from the previous occasion we had been there some 30 years earlier and Leigh was interested in the newly completed 'Challenge Valley' assault course which had been erected in time for EuroJam.
